Some of you may be blogging pros, while I know others are blogging novices.
If you are here, clearly you already read and followed the instructions from Module 1 on blogging. The first assignment states:
Remember, the point of journaling is to convey your ideas about what you are learning, but since you are in an academic format, it should be substantiated by the information that you are exposed to in this course. It does not matter if you like or dislike something; what matters is why you feel the way you do and what lead you in the sources you reviewed to feel that way.
1. Write a 250 word minimum piece of writing that can be used in a blog post. Your writing must document and describe one of the web resources in Module 01 and tell us, the reader what you have learned from it. Do not assume that all of your readers are familiar with the resource. Here is a good link for composing a quality academic journal post: http://faculty.weber.edu/kmackay/academic_journal.htm
So have fun, be creative, load pictures, link important websites. Although this is an academic exercise, I prefer that you explore your creative side, express yourself freely.
Enjoy.

I am doing this review on the source Native American Testimony by Peter Nabokov. The specific chapter I will focus on is called “Jantin Is Named Jesus” and this is a testimony by Janitin of the Kamia tribe. (58-60 Nabokov) I think Jantin’s perspective is meant to convey the cruelty and criminal actions of the San Miguel Mission in modern day California. Jantin was out with his family one day collecting clams when two men on horseback abducted him. They lassoed him and proceeded to drag his body along the way to the Mission of San Miguel, stopping to beat him on the way. Once he got there after much more abuse they turned him into a Christian and changed his name. Nabokov mentions that “the success of the California padres was judged by the number of Indian names on their baptismal rolls and the amount of farm and craft goods produced at the missions”. (59 Nabokov) After Jantin was beaten and baptized they put him to work in the fields. Jantin did not know how to use a hoe and cut his foot badly, they abused him for this. He later tried to escape but because of his injury he was caught, tied up and lashed. Jantin recounts his testimony as an old man. At some point he must have been able to escape but not without the scars from these lashes. These people tried to strip Jantin of his identity. This mission violently recruited Native Americans and made them into their slaves in the name of Christianity. This is a good example of the church hiding behind the name of God to gain power. Their objective wasn’t to save Jantin’s soul, however ridiculous that also sounds. Their goal was to conquer North America for personal greed and gain.
ReplyDelete“Jantin Is Named Jesus”(59 Nabokov) is just one testimony collected by author Peter Nabokov. I think this resource was selected for this course because there is nothing more historically accurate then first person sources. This whole book is filled with testimonies of Indigenous people who have a story to tell. I think that is so powerful. It really gives a voice to the actual people we are learning about.
